2011-12-10: Michelmas Term 2011 Summary
By: JR
As Michaelmas Term comes to a close it has been a successful term for the boat club, at both novice, senior and alumni (!) level:-
The club welcomed its intake of freshers at the start of term and was able to field six novice boats, three on either side of the club. Notable performances throughout the term were Women's Novice A progressing to the semi-final at Nepthys regatta and Men's Novice B reaching the 4th round at Christ Church regatta. All the crews progressed beyond the first round, any many are now training with the senior squad to prepare for Torpids next term.
The senior men have raced three times during the term:-
A coxed four comfortably beat all comers at Autumn Fours to take the trophy - most pleasingly the whole boat had learnt to row at Pembroke, two of them only last year.
Later on during term the 1st Eight raced at Wallingford Head, placing 9th overall and being in the mix with leading club crews such as Molesey, UTRC, Henley and Star. They placed a full minute ahead of Christ Church as the closest college crew, and 30 seconds ahead of the top Oxford Lightweight boat.
Therefore, it was with great hope the boat went to Cambridge to race at Fairbairns. At the half way point they led all crews - up by 2.8s on the ultimate winners Caius, the leading Cambridge college over the last couple of years. Unfortunately a crash in the gut cost them the race, and they were forced to walk away as the 3rd placed college crew, and with an even greater hunger for the Torpids Headship.
For the first time ever a crew in the Pembroke pink was seen racing in America, as an alumni crew took on the Head of the Charles. After nine months of training apart, the crew came together three days before the race and made some quick improvements. With some great lines steered down the notoriously difficult course the crew came 27th out of 39 crews and raised $2,500 for the Bridging Centuries campaign.
We wish you all a very merry Christmas and see you in 2012 for the renewed Headship assault.

"The OURCs committee would like to thank all competitors for a very
enjoyable Summer Eights. Thank you. Thank you to all those who provided
evidence for the W1 race committee.
RESULT APPEAL W1:
- Decision at first instance no bump between Pembroke and Balliol
- Appealed to race committee by Pembroke. Race Committee engage in
fact-finding exercise to discover what happened. This is done on the
balance of probablities in accordance with most fact-finding exercises
conducted, with the exception of criminal proof. On the balance of
probabilities the Race Committee of Thomas Baker (OURCs, Jesus), Sahil Sinha (OURCs, St Hilda's) and Phillip McCullough (OURCs,
St Catherine's) decided that Pembroke bow had made contact with Balliol
stern. Race committee saw no reason why any benefit should be given in
favour of a bump or against a bump and so chose a simple balance. The
decision was based upon eye-witness accounts, many of which from very
experienced people, as well as the umpire reports, the accounts of both
parties, marks on each boat and the video and photgraphic evidence
provided. This took at least 5 hours over the two days to examine.
- Balliol appeal to the Senior Umpires that race committee should
have used an alternative test for whether a bump had occurred, in short
they suggested that we should be sure beyond reasonable doubt. The
Senior Umpires accepted the appeal from Balliol and decided that the
race committee were not sufficiently sure of the bump and so should not
have awarded it to Balliol. As such the decision was overturned and
bumps stand as announced."

2011-05-31: PCBC Summer Eights and Beyond
By: Friends of PCBC
Summer Eights is nearly upon us, but first of all thank you to everyone that came to the inaugural Friends' dinner (a full review will be included in the VIIIs newsletter); it was great to see so many of you, and we hope that this will become a highlight of the Friends' calendar.
All of the crews are now making their final preparations, with both M1 and W1 within reach of their respective headships, M2 and W2 looking strong for their positions, M3 showing the depth of our novice intake this year and the invitational M4 looking to get blades after a strong performance in rowing on. The stage is set for an exciting week and we hope that you can make it down to the boathouse, where we will have the customary BBQ and bar, with G&D's also in attendance selling icecream. For the first time this year PCBC will have a twitter feed (@PCBCOxford) so if you can't make it down to the boathouse because you're chained to your desk you can still follow the week's action.
The next date in the diary, for those of you who are attending Henley Royal Regatta this year, will be the FoPCBC teatime drinks - from 4pm on Saturday 2nd July in the Green's Field car park. We'll have a gazebo (with a green top) - keep an eye out for the Pembroke Flag that we will have fixed on to it! After experiencing strong demand last year, we ask for a £5 contribution towards the Pimm's.
To give us an idea of numbers, and therefore how much Pimm's to bring, please RSVP to pembrokeboatclub@gmail.com or join the facebook event.

2011-05-15: Promising Showing at Bedford
By: PCBC Committee
Despite getting knocked out (an early bump?) in the semi-finals of IM2, M1 posted some of the fastest times amongst Oxford Colleges at Bedford Regatta.
