I know this has probably been done to death before, but I'm bored....here is my fantasy 8 made up of non rowing british sportsmen:

Bow: Andy Murray (tennis) 6ft 3 79KG....fit and agile
2: David Haye (boxing) 6ft 3 100kg....great power to weight ratio
3: Tom Croft (rugby) 6ft 6 105kg...tall, strong, fit 'nuff said
4: James Haskell (rugby) 6ft 4 114kg...as above
5: Joe Worsley (rugby) 6ft 5 114kg...as above
6: Simon Shaw (rugby) 6ft 8 123kg....every boat has to have a donkey somewhere
7: Mark Foster (swimming) 6ft 5 90kg....he may be getting on a bit, but brings "maturity" to the 7 seat
8: Chris Hoy (cycling) 6ft 1 92kg...good at rhythm and a fair bit of power (plus he can actually row!)
cox: Bradley Smith (motorcyling) 5ft 8 53kg....should know how to take a good line
Average height:6ft 4
Average weight: 102kg

Obviously a bit rugby heavy but the England pack offers some big, fit and strong lads to fill the engine room.
I often wondered if you took 8 international rugby players and gave them intensive rowing coaching for 6 months, how fast they could be!
It's a shame there isn't something like this in the UK:

Bow: Eddie The Eagle
2: Mark Phillips
3: Colin Montgomerie
4: Gazza
5: Phil 'The Power' Taylor
6: WG Grace
7: Jimmy White
Stroke: Frankie Dettori

Cox: Lennox Lewis

I reckon this eight would fly!

I think the 2- would be better:

Strk: David Cameron
Bow: Tony Blair

They would be good at rowing because they are both well used to looking one way but directing all of their efforts towards moving in the opposite direction.

The rugby lads would lose a lot of weight in those 6 months to become areobically fit for rowing.

Case Study is Rob Waddell - wasn't he something like 120kgs whilst on sail boats and then dropped to 100-105kgs when challenging Mahe?

I went to Lords recently and saw England play cricket. They warmed up right in front of us and I was surprised how big they all are. Peitersen is something like 6'3", Alister Cook taller and the bowlers even taller so if they could get rowing fit they would be interesting. I'm sure some of them from the public schools would have rowed.

I reckon Jensen Button would be quite good too - remember James Hunt on superstars?

Also Peter Crouch certainly has the height but I'm not sure about the co-ordination

Footballers wouldn't be fit enough or strong enough. Button's too small...he might make a good lightweight.

Footballers not fit enough? You've got to be joking. There are plenty of Premier League guys who are around 6'2 (eg Rio Ferdinand) and would be far more use than Andy Murray.

Button would be ***, he got beaten in a triathlon by a 15 year old girl recently and he trains a fair bit.

Am going for one person from each sport.

1. Andy Murray - fit, agile ,good hand eye co-ordination.
2. Kevin Pietersen - powerful shots and good hand eye co-ordination could translate well into rowing. relying on him and Murray to sit the boat up.
3. David Haye -providing the beans
4. Chris Hoy - This Hoy and hay power partnership will blast the opppostion away
5. Dwain Chambers - another to provide explosive ower in the middle. lets hope its a short race.
6. Crouchy - providing good length for the crew
7. Lee Westwood - not the fittest but will help set a good rythm and consistency over the whole course.
8. Jonny Wilkinson - known for his consistent kicking, relentless training and being hard as nails. Id want this guy to lead my crew.
Cox - The crew decide between Lewis Hamilton and Jensen Button. If they can steer an F1 car, they can steer a boat.

This would fly!!!

Footballers are wussies. None of them would last 5 minutes on a full out rowing training programme. Don't forget Murray is 6ft 3 and I would have him in a crew before any premier league poofballer, he's fitter, stronger and more agile than any footballer (even if he is a miserable Scots git!).
I'm particularly keen on the cox...Bradley Smith.....you might not have heard of him he rides in the 125cc class of Moto GP and had 9 podiums from 16 races in 2009 (and he's only 19) so I think he would steer a pretty good line!

just out of interest here is the C2 training programme of the Llannelli Scarlets (obviously focussed on short high power bursts but interesting nonethless)
http://concept2.co.uk/training/rugby_llanelli
Llannelli Scarlets Rowing Sessions

The following sessions have been created by Wayne Proctor, conditioner of Llanelli Scarlets. Each player will have there own target depending on their abilities. The targets shown give an indication of the range in which Wayne expects his players to perform.

Speed Training
Session 1
3 sets x 8 reps 100m row @ maximal pace - 40s recovery between reps 3-4mins between sets

Target pace:
Sub 1m 26s / 500m target - achieved within 3-4 strokes at the start of each rep

Session 2
3 sets x 8 reps 10s sprint / 10s cruise / 10s sprint @ maximal pace - 1 min recovery between reps 3-4 mins between sets

Target Pace:
Sub 1m 25s-28s / 500m target for sprint
Sub 1m 50s / 500m target for cruise

Session 3
3 sets x 10 reps 10s sprint @ maximal pace -
6 med ball slams into ground - recovery between reps
2-3 mins between sets

Target Pace:
Sub 1m 25s / 500m target for sprint
Sub 1m 50s / 500m target for cruise

Speed Endurance Training
Session 1
500m intervals
Target time sub 1:42
2 mins recovery between reps
As many reps as possible
11 - Lee Byrne
10 - Ian Boobyer

Session 2
6 x 500m intervals
4 x 250m intervals
500m Target time < 1 min 35s all 6
250m Target time < 55s all 4
Additional target - maintain a drop off of less than 10s for both 500m & 250m
Lee Byrne
Performed all 6 x 500m with 13s drop off. Quickest 1.23s - Slowest 1 min 36s
Performed all 250m under 51s

Session 3
Intervals of 50m up to 500m, increasing 50m per interval, and back down
Maximal pace throughout
1:1 recovery for each rep (All players reckon it's the hardest they perform)

Session 4
This session is used during periods of heavy fixture schedules for those players who do not get much playing time. Targets would obviously be not that impressive for the type of player being trained

Week Distance Reps Recovery Total Metres
1 1000 1 1:1 2250
750 1 1:1
500 1 1:1
2 750 2 1:1 2500
500 2 1:1
3 750 1 1:1 2250
500 3 1:1
4 500 5 1:1 2500

Aerobic Training
Session 1
3 x 1000m
Target Pace:
Rep 1 sub 3:15, Rep 2 sub 3:20, Rep 3 sub 3:30

3 x 500m
Target Pace:
All sub 1m 40-42s

1:1 rec for all reps

Session 2
Rep 1 - 2 min row @ sub 1m 40s / 500m pace
30s rec

Rep 2 - 3 min row @ sub 1m 45s / 500m pace
60s rec

Rep 3 - 3 min row @ sub 1m 48s / 500m pace
60s rec

Rep 4 - 3 min row @ sub 1m 50s / 500m pace
60s rec

Rep 5 - 10 inclusive - 30s row @ sub 1m 35s / 500m pace
30s rec between reps

Rep 11 - 20 inclusive - 10s row @ sub 1m 30s / 500m pace

Session 3
3 x 2000m (3:00 recovery between reps )

b: Chris Hoy (cycling)
2: Mariusz Pudzianowski (strongman/ MMA fighter)
3: Vitali Klitschko (boxing)
4: Sebastien Chabal (rugby)
5: Michael Phelps (swimming)
6: John Isner (tennis)
7: Tim Brabants (kayaking)
s: Usain Bolt (athletics)

cox: Ellen MacArthur (sailing)

Powerful bow pair, hopefully Hoy is up to the task of keeping the boat straight. Massive middle four, with proven endurance and water feel thrown in. Experienced seven man, with good ergo and boat feel. Long and relaxed strokeman who will get you out of the blocks pretty quick and a small cox who's spent more time steering boats than anyone else I can think of!

I really want to see it in action now!

True, just imagine if there was a clash! They'd all dive out of the boat clutching their shins!

I'd like to see you find a boat big enough to fit Klitschko (especially in the 3 seat)!

It's fitting quadzilla into the bow seat I'd be more worried about! The man in between them is no lightweight either!
